The Lugo City Council has this week authorized the construction, in the Polígono de O Ceao, of an industrial building that will house a centralized thermal production plant for hot water for heating. This new infrastructure, which will later be completed with an urban distribution network on Benigno Rivera Avenue, includes the installation of 4 biomass boilers and two natural gas boilers on a plot, on which it is also planned the creation of 23 linked parking spaces, which will occupy an area of 2,204 m².

This proposal arises from the ideas collected in the Catalogue of Urban Solutions of the LIFE Lugo + Biodinámico, a compilation of sustainable measures at different scales, from the most specific, a building, to the whole city, also providing solutions for streets and neighbourhoods. Relying on the principles of LIFE Lugo + Biodinámico, this plant will use biomass combustion technology and electrical energy from renewable sources –biomass and concentrated solar energy- to produce hot water, both for heating and sanitation, serving residential buildings, educational, health and administrative centers, among others.

In this way, the neighbors will be able to have heating and hot water in their homes without needing private installations for energy supply which implies a reduction in costs, because they will only pay for consumption, which is Up to 20% cheaper than current systems. “It should be noted that, apart from the environmental advantages and benefits it brings, with which we want to contribute to the decarbonization of the atmosphere, the initiative also has a character of economic revitalization and generator of local employment”, recalled Mayor Lara Méndez in the presentation of this new thermal production plant.

Thus, the principles of LIFE Lugo + Biodinámico and the GUD-Lugo Urban Solutions Catalog are consolidated in the city and are an example for other European municipalities.
